According to the Italian government, U.S. citizens need a visa to travel to Italy for stays of more than 90 days, so, for more of 90 days is required a document called “permesso d soggiorno”.
So, a visa is not required for US citizens who want to travel to Italy just for tourism or business, just a travel of less than 90 days.
